History & character.
Character
Der Orankesee ist ein 4 ha großer Stadtsee in Alt-Hohenschönhausen (Bezirk Lichtenberg). Zusammen mit dem nördlich angrenzenden Obersee bildet er das Zentrum des historischen Villenviertels Hohenschönhausen, um das herum sich seit 1898 die elegante Wohnbebauung entwickelte.
Water structure
Etwa 350 m lang, 150 m breit, max. 4,5 m tief. Ufer überwiegend bewohnt, im Süden 300 m langer Sandstrand des Strandbads Orankesee. Klares, mesotrophes Wasser. Kein Zufluss, grundwassergespeist.
Nature & history
Der See entstand in der letzten Eiszeit. 1925 entstand das Strandbad Orankesee mit aus der Ostsee herangeschafftem Sand – eine Berliner Besonderheit. Das umliegende Villenviertel ist heute denkmalgeschützt.

Water temperature rises slowly. Perch move into shallow bays, pike finish spawning. Best time: from mid-April along weed edges.
Summer
Warm and nutrient-rich. Predators bite early morning or evening. Night fishing for eel and catfish is most productive now.
Autumn
Pike and zander feed up for winter. Large soft swimbaits & a slow presentation get the big ones now.
Winter
Cold and clear. Target species in deeper troughs. Vertical jigging from the boat or a bottom rig at dusk give the best chances.
