Fines for violations
Pursuing, catching or killing a fish during the closed season or below the minimum size is an offence under the BbgFischG. Brandenburg imposes fines of up to €50,000, higher for intentional violations. Your fishing licence may also be revoked. If protected fish are caught by accident: release immediately and carefully; if deeply hooked, cut the line at the level of the mouth.
Spreewald special rules
In three Spreewald waters (VC 03-01, VC 09-03, VC 09-04), different closed seasons apply per the LAVB water regulations:
- Pike: 15 Jan – 30 Apr (protection starts 2 weeks earlier)
- Zander: 1 Apr – 15 Jun (closed season 15 days longer)
- Scaled Carp: minimum size 40 cm (instead of 35 cm)
Legal basis
All information is based on the Brandenburg Fishing Regulation (BbgFischO) of 14 November 1997 (Annex to §2(1)) and the Brandenburg Fishing Act (BbgFischG) of 13 May 1993. Additionally the Water Regulations of the Landesanglerverband Brandenburg e.V. (LAVB) apply to association waters. The closed seasons and minimum sizes given here apply to rod fishing. Salmonid waters and special waters may have different rules.
