History & character.
Character
Der Helenesee ist ein 212 ha großer ehemaliger Braunkohle-Tagebau bei Lossow südlich von Frankfurt (Oder). Nach Stilllegung des Tagebaus 1958 wurde er ab 1965 geflutet und entwickelte sich zu einem der schönsten Badeseen Brandenburgs mit türkisblauem Wasser („Brandenburgs Karibik").
Water structure
Etwa 2,5 km lang, 1 km breit, max. 60 m tief. Sehr klares, kalkreiches Wasser durch Restkohlestaub. Steile Tagebau-Kanten am Süd- und Westufer, flachere Strandzonen am Ostufer. Tiefenrinne im Mittelbereich.
Nature & history
Tagebau 1922–1958 (Grube Helene). Flutung ab 1965, eröffnet als Naherholungsgebiet 1972. Heute Naturschutzgebiet mit angrenzendem Katja-See (ehemaliger Tagebau Markendorf). Beliebter Tauchsee wegen klarer Sicht (oft >5 m).

Water temperature rises slowly. Perch move into shallow bays, pike finish spawning. Best time: from mid-April along weed edges.
Summer
Warm and nutrient-rich. Predators bite early morning or evening. Night fishing for eel and catfish is most productive now.
Autumn
Pike and zander feed up for winter. Large soft swimbaits & a slow presentation get the big ones now.
Winter
Cold and clear. Target species in deeper troughs. Vertical jigging from the boat or a bottom rig at dusk give the best chances.
